Kreeti’s Creatures

Hello Everyone!

This week I’m going to be blogging about my absolute favourite animal… THE ORCA! I’ve never met them but I really love them. This post is going to be the story of my fascination with orcas. Let’s get started!

THE ORCA

Also known as the killer whale, orcas are nicknamed “Wolves of the Sea” , because they really are like wolves of the sea! They will eat almost anything and everything under the sea including things like fish, squid, seals, sea birds, dolphins, turtles and even whale species of whales much larger than themselves! They orginally used to be called “whale killers” because apparently, in the ancient times, sailors saw the orcas kill whales much, much bigger than themselves. Despite the menacing name, killer whales have never been seen killing and eating a human. In fact, they are quite playful when they want to be! Oh, and did you know, orcas have been known to kill and eat sharks when food is very scarce? That’s right, sharks aren’t the apex predators of the oceans! Orcas are!

My fascination towards orcas all started when I watched a video on how to draw an orca. It was a very life-like orca, believe me! I loved my drawing so much that I decided to name the orca! I named him Ollie. After that, I decided to research them, and research I did. (Including watching Free Willy and Free Willy 2.) I found a lot of interesting things about them, including their diet, appearence and a lot more. What I find very cool about orcas is that they are black and white, not grey like most other species in the dolphin family. They are also the most smart and social dolphins in the dolphin family. And last but not least, each pod or group of orcas have their own distinctive clicks and whistles in their vocabulary which members of the pod recognize evn at a distance!

There wasn’t quite enough information to cover the unique subject of orcas but that’s all for today! Thanks for reading and I hope to see you next time! One last fact: Each orca’s black and white coloured patches are unique to each individual orca! Bye!!
